Biofuels: Biotechnology, Chemistry, and Sustainable Development

Published in June 2008 by the Taylor & Francis Group, this was the first attempt to synthesize the totality of the science, history, engineering and economics that underpins any debate on biofuels.

Written from inside the fermentation industry, a close but objective look of the claims for biofuels in promoting energy independence and in helping to limit CO2 emissions and global warming covered:

  • The historical development of “bioethanol” as a fuel
  • Science and technology of processing pant biomass
  • Biotechnologcial routes to ethanol and other biofuels
  • The economics of a new global industry
  • The emergence of chemistry as a player in biofuels
  • The role of biofuels in the future
  • Biorefineries and the search for organic carbon beyond hydrocarbon oils

Biofuels will not save the Planet; on balance, they may do a little good or a little harm. As part of a new biomass-based approach to commodity chemicals, however, the experience gained from biofuels will be essential if the second half of the 21st century avoids energy drought and industrial dislocation.

A quick guide™ to BioFuels: When the Oil Runs Out book cover

A quick guide™ to BioFuels: When the Oil Runs Out

This was the brainchild of Larry E. Drumm, a walking encyclopedia of knowledge of the chemical and biotech industries. Larry wanted to reach out beyond the research community and academia to tackle head on issues such as how biofuels can affect everyday life.

They already do. In an era where oil prices are reached more than $100 a barrel, they are even competitive without much - or even any - subsidy.

Published in January 2010 by BioPlan Associates, the book pushed the coverage of biofuels into broad public areas and challenged perceptions:

  • The global oil crisis - “peak oil” now or soon?
  • What is, what isn’t a biofuel?
  • Why are there so many biofuels?
  • What impact will biofuels have on the total fuel market?
  • Must “food or fuels” continue to be an issue
  • What is happening around the world in biofuels?
  • How will biofuels impact our lifestyle and economics?
  • Oil companies and biofuels
  • The energy landscape in the next 50 years
  • The self help movement in biofuels
